Popspotting #107: â€œGame of Thronesâ€ (Aug. 16, 2011)

For TV Tuesday, we finally get around to “Game of Thrones,” a medieval fantasy series on HBO that many of you declared a must-see show. Indeed, fellow podcasters Colleen Glatfelter and Robin Burdge featured “Game of Thrones” during their Popspotting appearances.

Based on author George R. R. Martin’s best-selling “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series, “Game of Thrones” is an ambitious series that encompasses a sprawling, complex world. It takes some time to get a handle on who, what, and where, but it’s totally worth it. Beyond the sets, costumes, and effects, the characters and performances are really where this show shines.

The first season of ten episodes aired a few months ago. Although it was renewed for a second season only three days after it premiered, we won’t see more of “Game of Thrones” until next year.

Great show! Â I’m glad you guys finally got around to covering this series. Â I’m a HUGE fan of Martin’s books, and it’s so gratifying for the story and characters to get greater mainstream exposure due to HBO’s exemplary TV adaptation. Â Can’t wait for Season 2. Â No spoilers, but one small hint: Â if you thought the first season was great, just wait…

Thanks for covering the Game of Thrones series on HBO. I’m glad that you two liked it, and could communicate how it worked for viewers who had not read the books.

I’m glad you liked the performances of some of the major characters (Tyrion and Arya are nearly ubiquitously spotlit as faves), but I’d also like to hear your impressions of some of the secondary characters, like Lord Tywin the patriarch of the Lannisters and Ser Jorah, the exiled knight who is serving Daenerys.

I also wanted to hear your impressions of Jon Snow and his situation in the Night’s Watch at the Wall.

glad that you guys finally got to this show. i’ve found it to be the best tv since a certain Island program. like everyone else, Arya and Tyrion are faves, and i expect big things from Arya and Bran, not to mention John Snow. i’ve just started the books, it’s a very cool difference.
but you forgot some very important characters…
